• Romney Goes on Offensive in Florida
Ashley Parker, New York Times
Mitt Romney might have felt on Friday that he had finally gotten his groove back.Coming off a strong debate performance on Thursday night and with polls showing that he is ahead of his main rival, Newt Gingrich, in the Florida primary, an energetic and buoyed Mr. Romney spent the day hoping to capitalize on his newfound momentum, after a distant second-place finish last weekend in the South Carolina primary.
• The GOP Empire Strikes Back at Gingrich
Dan Balz, Washington Post
The revenge of the Republican establishment is a sight to behold. From one corner to another, those who have tangled with Newt Gingrich, who feel aggrieved toward Newt Gingrich or who fear Newt Gingrich have amassed to stop him. They know how much harder it will be to do so if the former House speaker wins Florida on Tuesday. The quintessential example of establishment angst came Thursday from Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee. Hours before Thursday’s GOP debate, he released a letter — circulated by Mitt Romney’s...
• It's Now the GOP Establishment vs. the Tea Party
Sarah Palin, Facebook
We have witnessed something very disturbing this week. The Republican establishment which fought Ronald Reagan in the 1970s and which continues to fight the grassroots Tea Party movement today has adopted the tactics of the left in using the media and the politics of personal destruction to attack an opponent. We will look back on this week and realize that something changed. I have given numerous interviews wherein I espoused the benefits of thorough vetting during aggressive contested primary elections, but this week's tactics aren't what I meant.
• Gloomy Gingrich Struggles to Snap Florida Slide
Alex Altman, Time
“Three nuclear weapons properly placed in Israel is a second Holocaust,” Newt Gingrich tells a room full of Jews. “If you’re going to go to Yad Vashem, if you’re going to say never again,” he adds gravely, peering out at a sea of elderly voters with Obama: Oy Vey buttons and paddles proclaiming their distrust for the liberal media, “then we had better act before it happens, not after.”
• Mitt's Negatives Soar With Independents
Greg Sargent, Washington Post
One key metric for determining whether the attacks on Mitt Romney and the bruising GOP primary are damaging him for the general election is this: How is he faring among independent voters, a key swing constituency, now that they’re getting to know him better?I’ve got a new partisan breakdown of some numbers from the new NBC/WSJ poll, and here’s the verdict: Romney’s unfavorability rating among independents has spiked 20 points in the last two months.
